Sales Resumes

When beginning a search for a new sales career, it is important that a resume is carefully prepared before presenting it to prospective employers.  Competition can be intense for these positions, so it is important for a candidate to promote themselves effectively on paper to better their chance for an interview.  There are a number of things to keep in mind when creating this integral document. Resumes should be compiled with complete thoughts and ideas, with no jargon or elaborate designs that may draw away from the information.

For experienced candidates looking for a more prestigious position, the accomplishment format is the most effective.  To create this document, the candidate’s full name is flushed to the left, with their contact information flushed to the right.  This separates the information, while allowing maximum organization.  The body will follow, highlighting such areas as “Sales Professional”, a list of acquired skills, “Inside Sales, Outside Sales, Negotiations,” and “Client Relations.”  This will organize information so that employers are able to easily view skills and capabilities.

The following section should include a paragraph that summarizes specific qualifications.  This is much better than an “Objective” paragraph that states what a candidate is looking for in a position, because this informs employers of what the job seeker has to offer them.  This enables the candidate an opportunity to highlight any past success, sales records, and/or the desire for advancement.  A personal description or pertinent skills may also be included here (ex: decisive, articulate, attention to detail, etc.).  The next section should include past employers and specific accomplishments or duties completed at that place of employment.  Candidates should keep in mind that a resume is not intended to be an autobiography, but a synopsis.

Finally, end the sales resume with educational background.  Focus should be on any certifications, vocational courses, licenses, degrees, or diplomas.  It is not necessary for hobbies, reasons for leaving a position, or any religious or political associations to be mentioned.  For more information on creating a sales resume, please visit the following sites:
